WWW Retreats in Botswana

“And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28

Just hours after Sarah’s death, we as her family sat huddled in the floor of an EMS facility in Fulton County, Georgia, praying Romans 8:28, and pleading with the Lord to compassionately allow us to see at least some of the good He could work from the incomprehensible sorrow that had just befallen us.

In those moments we knew His Word and His promises were true, but we could not begin to imagine how He might accomplish it. Almost 6 years later, we have seen Him faithfully and miraculously work good from each and every aspect surrounding Sarah’s life and death.

When we as a family traveled to the Southern Baptist International Mission Board in the Fall of 2017 to deliver the funds raised in honor of Sarah, we went in prayer that God would show us if He was leading us to go on mission as a family to Botswana. While there He made it abundantly clear he was opening that door for us.

Since then we have had the privilege of going three times, and our hearts have been knit to the hearts of our many brothers and sisters we have come to know and love there. But never in our wildest imaginations could we have foreseen this most recent redemptive opportunity God would provide for us.

Our greatest joy is seeing God use Sarah’s life and our sorrow for His glory. And I can think of no more poignant way for Him to do this than through this precious opportunity we now have in partnership with While We’re Waiting (WWW) to host a retreat for bereaved parents in Botswana.

We will be partnering with other WWW facilitators to host two retreats simultaneously, allowing us to minister to up to 20 couples. Just like WWW retreats across the US, this retreat will be provided completely free of charge to the parents who attend.

Our prayer in hosting the retreat is that the families we meet will experience and know personally the Hope of Jesus Christ. But also we are praying for God to raise up leadership to launch While We’re Waiting there to continue to share the Hope of Jesus Christ with grieving parents in Botswana and ultimately across Africa.

If you would like to help provide the funds for the accommodations, meals and supplies for the parents attending the retreats you may do so through this fundraiser.

But most importantly, we hope you will partner with us in praying for God to help us minister well to the families who attend, and for God to raise up leaders there to continue caring for grieving families.

  1. Harmening Family, you are such a testimony to what God has done in your life even in the most heart-wrenching circumstances of child loss. Your heart for others is priceless. I aspire to be more like you. I know Sarah is smiling big!
